Dedicated yard switchers play a critical role in our customer's transportation needs by ensuring the timely movement of trailers in and out of the docks on-site at the customer's location. Unlike some positions, this one gives you a better idea of the number of hours each week holds, which means you'll have a better idea of what to expect in every paycheck. And because you know your customers and their typical freight load, you'll never be surprised or slowed down by unusual shipments.

• Competitive pay:
• Average $1,092 a week; $52,440 a year (based on 48 weeks)
• Starting pay is $23 per hour
• The usual 5-day work week is 40-48 hours
• Overtime applies after 40 hours per week, paid at time and a half
• Home daily
• 5-day work week
• Sunday - Thursday, night shift starting between 8:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. ending around 7 a.m.
• Friday night work as customer demands

    • Must have previously served in the U.S. military or have a family member with Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits available. To check to see if you have available benefits, please call the V.A at 888-442-4551. It could take the V.A. approximately 90 days to determine eligibility.
    • If you qualify for the Post 9/11 GI benefits, you are eligible to get up to 12 monthly payments from the V.A. while you receive on-the-job training.
    • You will receive 5 weeks of behind-the-wheel training at $900/week. During the remaining 46 weeks you will work with a mentor and leadership for follow-up training and communication.
    • Eligible Veterans will complete all required paperwork during orientation. Benefit checks are paid directly from the Department of Veteran Affairs - not Averitt - usually 4-6 weeks after training begins. Military Student Training Program:

        • Must have Class A CDL
        • Must be 21 years of age or older
        • No convictions for reckless driving within the past 5 years
        • No convictions for DUI within the past 5 years
        • No suspensions or revocations within the last 5 years
        • No serious violations within the previous 12 months (15 mph or greater, following too closely, improper passing, traffic offense committed in a CMV in connection with fatality)
        • No more than 3 moving violations within the past 3 years
        • No preventable DOT recordable accidents within the past 3 years Essential Functions:
          • Open/Close trailer door - force requirement: 46 lbs
          • Hook/Unhook trailer - force requirement: 90 lbs
          • Perform pre-trip inspections
          • Drive
          • Regular predictable attendance
          • Frequent bending for placement of wheel chocks
          • Safely enter/exit yard tractor 100+ times per shift
          • Lifting/opening trailer doors
          • Sliding trailer tandems when necessary
          • Safely maneuvering equipment with good backing skills
